Arthritis is a common condition amongst us here in Canada. Most patients agree that their arthritic pain gets worse when it gets cold. But why is it that no one really talks about way to prevent it until it’s too late? Let’s take a look at Traditional Chinese Medicine first for the answer.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, most of the symptoms surface because one did not take care of oneself at a younger age and that everything that you do as a child/young adult has a huge impact on quality of living at a later age. One of the major elements in self-care is avoiding exposure to “coldness”. For example, pregnant women were not allowed to drink or wash their face or even brush their teeth with regular temperature tap water (it must be at least lukewarm), kids were told to always dress up warmly to prevent flu, and seniors all have “knee warmers” wrapped around their knee during the winter.
Before your joint becomes arthritic, there is a stage where joints have mild inflammation but not yet causing any pain. At this stage, if proper preventive methods have been taken, the joint might never develop arthritis. How do we prevent the disease from developing then in the beginning stage of arthritis? First of all, we go back to the “coldness” theory, one has to protect joint warmth to prevent extreme exposure to cold which cause aggravate the inflammation which could be a risk factor for developing severe arthritis. Second of all, proper treatments are important. Receiving treatments from our clinic prevents symptom aggravation. At MJT, we combine Western and Eastern theories to create individualized treatment, which can be different for everyone.
